Hard to heat glass studio chooses Herschel Infrared

"I'm able to keep working when the cold would have slowed me down in the past"

Andrea Spencer Glass Studio chooses Herschel Infrared

Old farm buildings make ideal studios and workshops, featuring open space, high ceilings and individual character. These spaces can be hard to heat, and Herschel has space heaters designed specifically for these demanding applications.

Background

Andrea Spencer is an internationally recognised glass artist, based on the North Coast of Co. Antrim. Her studio is an old, stone farm building. Cavity insulation has been applied to the walls, and the steel sheet roof has been treated internally with spray foam insulation. The kilns generate a low level of background, and localised heat in the studio but the space becomes uncomfortably cold during the Winter months. Andrea’s work is delicate and highly skilled, so cold hands can limit productivity and even stop very fine work. She took time to consider heating options, based on site conditions.

Solution

A combination of Herschel Aspect XL3 and Advantage IR3 space heaters were installed into the studio space.

Testimonial

“We use a lot of gas on-site for the kilns, so a standard boiler and radiator system seemed an obvious choice initially. We’d need to find space for the boiler, and the installation of pipework for wall-mounted radiators was going to be disruptive and messy, but we weren’t aware of an alternative.

By chance I spoke to another local artist who explained infrared was simpler and more effective for cold studios. We trialed a single Herschel XL3 space heater  for a couple of days and decided to go for it.”

“Rather than heat the entire space, much of which is storage or rarely in use for any length of time, we use three heaters to maintain comfort in the main work areas in the studio. The heaters were fast and simple to install, and cost significantly less than a boiler based system. Running costs are predictable and the heat is very natural and comfortable. Because the space heaters focus heat in a defined area, I can heat the area where I’m working rather than the whole space which reduces running costs. I’m also able to keep working when the cold would have slowed me down in the past”. Andrea Spencer, @aspencerglass
